Chapter 6/Getting Rich

Which is the best month of the year to buy stocks?

August. This is the worst-performing month for stocks since 1990. If we really are supposed to buy low and sell high, then it makes sense to buy in August, when depressed investors often decide – usually against their financial advisors’ advice – to do the opposite and sell. Another stinker month traditionally is June, the second-worst performing month for stocks since 1990.

Chapter 7/ Getting Healthy

When is the best day of the week to expect speedy service from your doctor?

Wednesday or Thursday. Doctors on Monday tend to see the most patients, some of whom should have gone to hospital emergency rooms or urgent- care centers during the weekend but didn’t go because they couldn’t afford it or tried to tough it out. Tuesday is still busy due to patients who couldn’t get seen on Monday. This doesn’t apply to January and February, but doctors offices typically are less busy by Wednesday and Thursday, making them the easiest days of the week to get an appointment. People who start to get sick on Thursday will want to be seen on Friday, before the weekend starts, so Fridays also tend to be busier than usual.

Which is the best day to be admitted to a hospital if you don’t want to stay long?

Chapter 8/Getting The Job Done

If you have a choice, when is the best time of day to interview for a job?

10 a.m., 11 a.m. or 3 p.m. If you interview at 9 a.m., the interviewer may have just arrived at work and may feel rushed and unprepared and find it difficult to focus on you.  Right after lunch, people often feel sleepy and also find it hard to focus. At 4 p.m. and later, interviewers often are tired and are thinking more about going home than about anything else.

Another view:

Pick a time based on what’s best for you. If you’re a morning person and are especially sharp then, ask for the earliest time you can get. Whatever time of day you think you’re at your best is a good time because you’ll be more confident, and your confidence may help you land the job.

Chapter 9/Around The House

If you only clean your gutters once a year, when is the best month of the year to do it?

November. Cleaning your gutters in November, after the vast majority of leaves have fallen, prevents this worst-case scenario: The leaves and twigs block the downspouts, keeping gutters full of water, which freezes in the winter and causes your gutters to detach from the house. Clogged gutters can also lead to water damage to wood on the fascia boards and to other problems, including flooded basements. Clean your gutters at least twice a year. May is another good time to rid your gutters of spring blossoms and “helicopters” from maple trees.

Chapter 10/Around The World

When is the best time of the year to book a hotel room?

The end of the quarter or the end of the year. Hotel sales staffers have quotas, just as car salesmen do, and they’re usually quarterly quotas. So if you know you’re taking a trip to a particular city sometime in the future, call a hotel where you want to stay at the end of March, June, September or December. Sales staffs become more eager to book rooms when the clock is ticking at the end of a quarter, and bonuses are on the line.  If you book a room then, regardless of when you actually stay at the hotel, it will count as a sale for the quarter when it is booked.

If you’re going to a city and you can be flexible about when you go, call hotels there and ask when they will offer discounted rates. Hotels know months in advance when they are likely to be busy and when they are likely to have plenty of vacancies.  It’s at these times that they offer the best rates.

Did you know:

Have you ever read an Internet review of a hotel you’re interested in and wondered if it’s real? A team from Cornell University has developed software that tries to spot positive fake reviews, and it claims an accuracy rate of nearly 90 percent – a 40-percentage point improvement over discerning adults. The team found that true reviews more often use words that describe the hotel experience, such as bathroom, check-in and price while fake reviews typically use words, such as business, vacation and husband, that explain why the alleged guest picked the hotel.
